The site is located between Quorn and Loughborough, and comprises an area of arable fields and scrubland east of the A6 Loughborough Road.

 

The high quality Soar Valley river terrace sand & gravel deposits found at the site have historically been extracted in the local area and used to produce a range of vital construction materials for building houses, roads and civil infrastructure.

 

The site has good connection to the regional road network, providing ready access into these local markets, helping to support jobs and development in the local area. The quarry would be in operation for around 8-10 years in total.

On behalf of W&J Parker Ltd, Greenfield Environmental Ltd has submitted a planning application which includes a full environmental impact assessment of the proposed scheme, the scope of which has been agreed with Leicestershire County Council (LCC) through a formal Scoping process. The proposed layout of the quarry, the working methods and site control measures have been carefully designed to minimise and mitigate adverse impacts on the environment, both natural and human, and to take account of feedback received from consultees and nearby residents.

The sand and gravel will be excavated in phases using diggers and taken to the processing area - no blasting will take place. The material is then washed to remove silt and separated into different products.

 

Following extraction, each phase will be progressively restored whilst the next phase is being worked, meaning that only parts of the site will be active at any one time, and restoration will be achieved as quickly as possible.

 

Upon completion, the site will largely be restored back to agricultural use, although some areas will be restored to a range of wildlife habitats including a wetland area and species-rich grassland to provide a diverse range of habitats for native wildlife.
